Okay, so they can't count, but they believe readers deserve to be rewarded. And we agree!

From December 1-25, Imajin Books will be awarding random prizes to those who leave comments on their Facebook page. So drop by, check out their posts and leave a comment or question.

Want to win even more? Check out their Share the Imajin Books Buzz contest. You could win a Kindle Fire HD or Kobo equivalent, or one of two $50 Amazon gift cards. Author Jesse Giles Christiansen

I owe a lot to Captain Shelby. Yes. I do. After all, he got me my first published book. He mystifies me, inspires me, fills me with hope for the future, sweetly terrifies me, and floods me with humble gratitude.

I am not sure if a writer sits down and maps out a character. I believe that characters are born from the pages of a novel, squirming, screaming, kicking, treading in the amniotic whiteness, clawing at its author's heart to be pulled onto a black boat of words, a floating sentence, from which they can grow into paragraphs, chapters, and hopefully memorable novels.

Captain Shelby surprised me. Really surprised me. PELICAN BAY was not supposed to be about him at all. The novel was supposed to be about a sunken cemetery and an eccentric, forlorn beach town. And it is, make no mistake. It is. But the old fisherman was delivered and then just kept stretching, barking his sea bark at me to make him bigger. Bigger. Bigger. And if you read PELICAN BAY, you will quickly understand that it was better for me not to argue with him.

I know, I know. But I have not answered the question at stake, have I?

I suppose I could talk about the old man's "raw materials." Yes. That's it.

It was as if everything that was meaningful to me, the darkness of life, the lightness of life, the enthralling sea and its boundless mysteries, all the father figures of my life who have come and gone, it was as if all of that stuff, animated by little lightning bolts from my fingers like a Dr. Sea Frankenstein, birthed Captain Shelby.

And I wanted to do something new with a character's voice. Something impossible yet tangible. Something deeply original yet accessible. So the question occurred to me, "What if an old man, having been around so long, could be a melting pot of dialects and adages and mannerisms ... some misfit of the sea?"

And the old man was born, to the best of my recollection, early February, 2011, on a snow day when my neighbor's kids were riding snow mobiles incessantly and annoyingly all over the street, and I, well, I was doing what all writers do on snow days ...

... I was creating a character.
I hope that you enjoy Captain Shelby as much as I have.
Yours in literature,
J.G.C.

FREE ebook by Author Luke Murphy

FREE, from June 26-28

My International bestselling crime-thriller, DEAD MAN’S HAND, is now FREE, from June 26-28. I’ve been so happy with the success and reviews since releasing my debut novel back in October. DMH hit International Bestselling status almost overnight.
There are so many crime-thriller writers and so many books in the genres that competition is at an all-time high. Many people have asked what makes my story so special and who would enjoy my book.
Why will this novel generate an audience?
- Dead Man’s Hand has tension and excitement as a result of the action taking place in a single week.

- The African-American protagonist is not stereotypical. While his race is significant, he does not moralize about the issue or his situation.

- The “find out who framed you to save yourself” plot has a twist in that Watters researches the crime online, primarily using analysis of character rather than physical evidence.

- Point of view is easy to follow but engagingly complex, with scenes from the perspectives of Watters, the detective, the cheating wife, and a hired assassin.

Who is my MAIN target audience and why?

- Thriller readers looking for an atypical thriller hero—an African-American who is no saint.

- Sports fans will be fascinated by Watters’ struggle to recover his decency and win, a kind of Blind Side story with little sentimentality and few illusions.

- A Las Vegas setting—the world of The Hangover movies and many youth films like Bridesmaids—will appeal to 20s-30s readers.

- Watters’ romance with a former prostitute will appeal to younger female readers.  The marital tension between Detective Dayton and his wife will interest adults. Both men and women will enjoy the twist on the femme fatale figure of the murderer’s lover, who has her own schemes.

Back cover:

What happens when the deck is stacked against you…

From NFL rising-star prospect to wanted fugitive, Calvin Watters is a sadistic African-American Las Vegas debt-collector framed by a murderer who, like the Vegas Police, finds him to be the perfect fall-guy.

…and the cards don't fall your way?

When the brutal slaying of a prominent casino owner is followed by the murder of a well-known bookie, Detective Dale Dayton is thrown into the middle of a highly political case and leads the largest homicide investigation in Vegas in the last twelve years.

What if you're dealt a Dead Man's Hand?

Against his superiors and better judgment, Dayton is willing to give Calvin one last chance. To redeem himself, Calvin must prove his innocence by finding the real killer, while avoiding the LVMPD, as well as protect the woman he loves from a professional assassin hired to silence them.

Reviews:

"You may want to give it the whole night, just to see how it turns out."
—William Martin, New York Times bestselling author of Back Bay and The Lincoln Letter

"Dead Man's Hand is a pleasure, a debut novel that doesn't read like one,
but still presents original characters and a fresh new voice."
Thomas Perry, New York Times bestselling author of Poison Flower

"Part police procedural, part crime fiction, Dead Man's Hand is a fast, gritty ride."
—Anne Frasier, USA Today bestselling author of Hush

New Release by author Kat Flannery

Lakota Honor

When writing LAKOTA HONOR I did a ton of research. When writing a historical novel there are certain elements that need to be correct. With this particular novel I needed to know where the Lakota natives originated from, their language, what they ate and their remedies for ailments and injuries.
These are just a few of the natural remedies I researched and what they are used for.

Icahpe Hu—translation unkown—Coneflower, Purple Coneflower, Black Sampson.
The prairie plant was used as an antidote for snake bites. Burned, the smoke was inhaled and worked for headaches, while the root could be chewed for toothaches.
PejiHota ape Blaskaska—Flat leaked sage—Wild Sage
Leaves are boiled and drank for upset stomach, and colds.
This plant was also used for religious ceremonies.
Pejuta NatiyaziLya—Incense for head—Purple Mallow
This was an important plant for the Lakota. When the root was burned the smoke was inhaled for head colds, or used to bathe aching muscles. The patient stands with a blanket over their heads in front of hot coals in which the plant is laid on top. The patient then inhales the smoke into their lungs for relief of their symptoms.
Known to smell like coconut.
Sinkpe tawote—Muskrats food—Sweet Flag or Bitterroot
This is the Lakota’s most traditional medicine. Found in the shallow parts of lakes and rivers.
The plant has been used to cure almost every known ill, but its dominant uses are for cold congestion, sore throat, and upset stomach. The root can be chewed or drank.
Pe’ tuntunpa—Slippery Elm
Found in elm trees, the bark is used for numerous illnesses. The bark is ground into a powder and added to water makes a paste to spread onto burns, skin wounds, cold sores, boils, abscesses and toothaches. Placed in a cup of boiling water the Lakota people would drink it to help with ulcers, sore throats, stomach ailments.
Witch Hazel
This was used for inflammation and swelling. Some tribes boiled the leaves and rubbed them onto the legs of tribesmen who were participating in sporting games. Boiled twigs were used to cure aching muscles.

Bio
Kat Flannery has loved writing ever since she was a girl. She is often seen jotting her ideas down in a little black book. When not writing, or researching, Kat enjoys snuggling on her couch with a hot chocolate and a great book.
Her first novel, CHASING CLOVERS became an Amazon’s bestseller in Historical and Western romance. This is Kat’s second book, and she is currently hard at work on the third.
When not focusing on her creative passions, Kat is busy with her three boys and doting husband.

"Don't get stung and miss this. You'll hive a great read and get a buzz."—Alan Place, author of Pat Canella: The Dockland Murders

Earth was in danger.

Jealous eyes gazed toward our Sun from a planet called Jive Hive in another star system, black compound eyes that peered without compassion as though we were flies caught on sticky paper ready for the fire.

The first of their suns was setting as blood-orange light spilled into the valley. Three female worker bees, two over seven feet tall and the other not quite five feet, sat under a purple-flowered tree, sorting through various blossoms, while other bees worked nearby.

"We can't go on like this much longer," Banter said. "There are too many of us. The hive has to find a new home. The Black Watch wasps, vicious as they are, know what they're doing. They've been scanning the skies for hundreds of years and keeping a check on our population."

She sat next to her cousins, Zibb and Bipp. They had worked all day collecting pollen for their hive. Now they rested and talked of the Imperative—to colonize. The whole Jive Hive planet was abuzz with the news.

"Yes," Zibb agreed. "The queen said this one is a plum ripe for the picking and only eight light years away. We'll be tired from the long sleep when we arrive. It'll be a brand new adventure for us. A new Jive Hive."

"Too bad there are beings there." Banter selected a fresh flower and began culling its nectar.

"Too bad we have to kill them all," Zibb said.
